How scared are you of failing?

How scared are you of failing?
⚡️⚡️FAILURE ⚡️⚡️- it's such a punchy, emotive word isn't it?
I remember not taking my driving test for about 18 months, just for fear of failing. I wanted to pass first time, so I waited, as if failing would create an indelible mark on my hitherto unblotted copybook.
I remember not wanted to press GO on launching my previous business, for fear it would fail. I had intended to launch a MVP but I held back launch for so long, it was nothing like a MVP by the time I launched. 🤦‍♀️
My old fixed mindset was terrified of failing.
A growth mindset on the other hand, which I've learned about and practiced for some years now, teaches us that failure is not something to be feared.
Failure is an opportunity for learning.
Now, as much as possible, I try to embrace failure as feedback.
As if it were some data to understand and learn from.
I like to think of failures - or let's reframe them as occasions when things didn't go as initially anticipated - as the breadcrumbs that lead from one life choice to another.
In this light our CV becomes a learning pathway, showing what we enjoyed, what was challenging, what we learned and what we did with it next...
Don't you think that would be a cool way to share your work experience - following the dots between one career choice and the next, that show where growth happened?

* You wake up thinking about what you're going to get done at work today.
* You eat meals at your desk (and often don't realise you've even eaten them).
* You barely give yourself time to pee (often holding on for as long as possible so you can just finish a task).
🚨 Question: When do you get time to actually, clearly, THINK?
✨Do you ever get time to think properly?✨
When I was working on my previous business, I moved seemlessly from one task to the next. I had a never-ending list of things to create, marketing copy to write, projects to start, admin to get done...
I'd started my business to be the boss of my own time, my own energy and my impact in the world. Yet, eventually, I no longer felt autonomous. My workload called the shots and my only option was to deliver.
I didn't have time to think. 😞
Until I started to train as a coach and learned about what *really* thinking felt like.. and the environment it required to take place.
In pure coaching (not to be confused with mentoring or consulting) a coach creates a 'thinking environment' - a supportive, non-judgemental, safe space in which they do excellent listening, so a client can do excellent thinking.
It's from this source that transformational 'A ha!' moments, self-awareness, personal and professional development are born.
If you're interested in discovering the deep wisdom, alignment and incisive clarity that come from giving yourself the opportunity and space to really think, DM me and let's chat.
I work 1:1 with purpose-driven female entrepreneurs to help them discover their aligned next steps and how to achieve them with maximum impact and zero burnout.

✨'One of the most empowering moments of my life came when I realised that life is a question and how we live it is our answer.'✨
This is favourite quote from 'The One Thing' by Gary Keller, a brilliant book on purpose, prioritisation and productivity.
The book both extolls the virtues of knowing the most important thing and making sure you do it, at the expense of other less important things... and explains how much of us live on automatic pilot and do the opposite.
Do you know what your life is asking of you?

'Possibly the most positive person you'll ever meet.'
That's how a recent client described me.
You might think I sound awful and want to run a mile. I hear that but bear with me.
She meant it as a positive. That I live and breathe the positive psychology I share with my clients. *
That doesn't mean I'm positive and happy 24/7, or that I deny or run away from my own negative feelings or emotions.
It does mean that I understand the value of creating positive emotions, for myself and others.
Having positive emotions in your life is a key part of your wellbeing - by which I mean the ingredients that enable you to flourish and thrive in life and work.
✨✨When you have better wellbeing, you're more likely to enjoy your work more, have greater openness, engagement, meaning, productivity and in turn, success.✨✨
There's a theory in positive psychology called 'Broaden and Build Theory', which argues that positivity is essential to the growth of all humans.
Positivity **broadens** our mind and expands our range of vision.
It also **builds** more psychological strengths, increasing optimism, resilience, acceptance and purpose.
✨What can you do today or over the weekend that is going to increase positive emotions in your life? ✨
* I am quite smiley too.

'Last year was so hard and depleting.
This year has got to be different.
I'm ready to take action to make it different.'
I've just onboarded a client who said these very words and I'm hearing them a lot.
She's now super excited to work together, looking for both clarity and self-knowledge, as well as the confidence that comes with them.
She's excited to know that at the end of the 90 days she's going to be able to say:
✨Here's who I am today.
✨Here's what I like.
✨Here's what I don't want to do anymore.
✨Here's what my business is all about.
✨This is why I / it is uniquely GREAT.
✨This is where I'm going and why.
✨Here are all my signature strengths I'm going to use to get there (and feel energised every day in the process).
✨ Here's what might trip me up (and how I've learned to stop it)
✨ Here's my plan of action, focused on purpose, priority and productivity.

✨You are not your thoughts.✨
I'm not sure why it took me until my 30's to learn this or 40's to really get involved in exploring what this looks like.
It's almost like a rite of passage, you have to wait until you go through challenging life events as an adult to get introduced to self-development, psychology, therapy or coaching and suddenly you learn all the things that would have been invaluable to know as you grew up. 🤦‍♀️
(*Side point - how do we get basic psychology taught in schools? Surely this would be a good idea?)
Suffice to say if you've never stopped to question the voices in your head, know that YOU are *not* the same as those voices.
If you can hear them, you are the observer of your thoughts.
You cannot be both the observer and observed at the same time.
Just because you have a thought, doesn't mean that it's true.
A lot of the time, your mind is not your friend.
* Those negative thoughts that remind you of your what you've done or said wrong today?
➡️ Not you, not your friend.
* Those negative thoughts that tell you you're an imposter and about to be discovered as a fraud?
➡️ Not you, not your friend.
* Those negative thoughts that tell you you're going to fail, so best not even try?
➡️ Not you, not your friend.
* Those negative thoughts that tell you to say YES to someone, for fear they might not like you if you say no, then you immediately regret (and resent) it?
➡️ Not you, not your friend.
* Those thoughts that tell you your work has to be PERFECT or else it / you are a failure?
➡️ Also, not you, not your friend.
I could go on.
We all have negative voices in our head. Some of them are inherited, so not even remotely ours to start with!
** When you're starting or growing your own business, they have more of an opportunity to get LOUD and let's face it, in the way.**
Our job is to question them.
* Is it true?
* What evidence do I have to prove that it's true?
* What evidence do I have to prove that it's not actually true?
* How do I feel when I have that thought? Who would I be without it?
* How could I look at this situation differently, in a way that will serve me?
✨What's your most frequent negative thought?

I can't tell you how many times Fear of Failure has crept it's way into my mind and my life and stopped or delayed me from doing things.
It's one of those pesky limiting beliefs we all suffer from.
It can take many forms, often found lurking deep beneath perfectionism, procrastination and lack of self-confidence.
BUT... Carl's right! Once we feel like we can do something, we no longer need to fear failing at it. The tricky bit is getting started...
Here's what I've learned:
* Approach everything from a place of strength - whatever it is you're considering, which of your unique strengths are based placed to tackle it? Be more YOU to feel more energy, joy and ease in the challenge.
* Approach everything with as many positive emotions as you can muster. The opposite of fear is HOPE. Build activities into your life that create positive emotions and you're much more likely to feel good about whatever it is that you're about to take on.
* Work out where you want to go and why (don't be superficial with this - ask yourself why lots of times, until you reach the deeper WHY behind your goal).
* Work out a pathway you need to take to reach your goal.
* Work out the steps you need to take along the pathway.
* Work out what might get in the way of you achieving that goal and what pathway might help you overcome that obstacle.
* Take the first step. Progress builds momentum and motivation.
* Competency builds confidence.
* Keep going!
** Finally, the one way to guarantee you fail? Don't even try. Heck, you might even fail if you hang about too long waiting to get started.
➡️ What helps you overcome fear of failure? 💫
PS. As I side point, I'm not sure I like the term 'fail' - we are never truly failing, always getting useful feedback 😉 Although sadly our brains don't often engage in semantic discussions when feeling a bit rubbish!

I'm not going to lie, I very much enjoy being called a magician 🪄💫
That said, it was my wonderful client, social entrepreneur and campaigner Lynsey Pollard who created all of her own magic in our coaching sessions late last year.
Lynsey is Founder and Director of @LittleBoxofBooks, helping primary schools diversify library and classroom bookshelves.
Lynsey is my ideal client. She's passionate about creating positive impact in her work, she's driven, motivated, open-minded and curious. She's keen to discover how she can support herself to fulfil her potential and flourish in her life and work, and crucially, she does the work, so she sees the results.
Thank you Lynsey Pollard for your fabulous recommendation. ❤️

I’ve always loved this philosophy, but … is it true?
YES – if you whole-heartedly enjoy your work you’re more likely to be:
a)	Using your highest unique strengths, so you’re happy, fully engaged, in flow and working in your zone of genius.
b)	Feeling authentic – so you’re feeling good, you’re more resilient and more likely to accomplish more.
c)	Benefiting from more positive relationships and emotions at work.
d)	Powered by passion and meaning, with purpose driving your work activities.
✨BUT – can loving your work be enough to prevent burn out and exhaustion?✨
HECK NO.
In fact, sadly the opposite can be true. People who are enormously passionate about their work and the impact that they’re seeking to create in their world are often the first to overlook their own wellbeing.
As they work harder and harder to be the change they want to see in the world, their committed focus on their ‘purpose,’ can crowd out their other needs.
We may love our work but we have other needs to serve too… when they get overlooked for ‘more important things’ for too long, the body and mind have a way of making themselves heard.
Just look at amazing Jacinda Ardern today. She’s clearly passionately given her all to her work. She’s achieved some incredible, admirable feats and yet now, her tank is so empty, that she has to stop, to look after herself. At some point she lacked the support and resources she needed to continue her job whilst making sure she looked after her wellbeing.
In my work coaching super ambitious female entrepreneurs, I see this a lot. Entrepreneurs who sacrifice their wellbeing as they pursue their goals.
Reversing this is often a case of perspective. Often we may understand ourselves to a certain degree but benefit from the support of a coach to see the stubborn blind spots that are holding us back from reaching our full potential.
I work 1:1 with female entrepreneurs over a 90-day period, to support them to get clear on who they are, what they truly want and how they can use their strengths to get there, without emptying their tanks.
If you’re struggling to keep your tank full as you balance life and your business, DM me and let’s chat. ❤️

How's your New Year going so far?
I'm hearing of some people who are either:

Delighted to have been able to connect with some super inspirational female founders this morning at a ✨Female Founders Rise✨ networking event. Just a tiny few of them can be seen here.

For me there are few things more energising than being surrounded by women full of passion, purpose and innovation, all looking to do great work in the world. Such a high vibe way to start the day!

What’s more, we all help each other. Being a female founder - frequently building a business at home, alone – can be lonely, challenging and tough. When we network, we gain solidarity, reassurance and advice from each other, as well as a big dose of positive connection (and positive emotions) which are key to our wellbeing.

When I closed AMotherBrand – the platform and network I created to help women build sustainable businesses around their busy family lives – I also lost the regular connection I had with the members. I miss them!

So I’m even more glad to be able to be part of FFR – what’s even more exciting is that I’m one of the ✨Founding Advisory Members✨.
Thank you @emmiefaust for your brilliant work in creating this network and the honour of being part of it. I look forward to connecting with many more of the members.
Go to Emmie's profile to join the burgeoning (free) network ✨❤️
